For the first time in three years, a drug that’s been on the market for more than 40 years may be getting the same kind of marketing push for a new medicine that has become widely available on the internet and is even advertised on the television.
The idea of the “generic” version of Nexium, a popular brand name for Prilosec, is already in its third year in sales. It’s a product that’s been on the market for over a decade and has already become the latest drug to get the attention of patients and doctors.
Nexium’s manufacturer, Teva, announced this week that the company is planning to market the drug as a generic version of Prilosec. The drug, which comes in a tablet form, will be available to patients in the United States by the end of this year. However, the company is not yet ready to launch the generic version of Nexium in the U. S. without prior approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
The company is also not yet sure how much of the $3 million the drug is going to cost. A spokeswoman for the company declined to comment, saying the company hasn’t yet reached a price agreement with its rivals.
Teva has been pushing for generic versions of Prilosec for years and it hopes to sell them for as low as $20 per gram to consumers. Generic versions of Nexium could be available to patients for less than $10.
There is no indication that generic Nexium is going to be available to the public. That’s because the drug has a risk of causing serious, life-threatening allergic reactions that can cause anaphylaxis and death. It may also be used to treat heartburn.
A spokeswoman for Teva declined to comment.
In addition, Nexium, which is used to treat acid reflux, is only available for about $10 a dose.
A number of the company’s competitors are also taking advantage of the availability of generic products for patients who might not be willing to pay for the expensive drugs. The company is also working with Teva to develop a generic version of Prilosec, a drug developed by Eli Lilly and Co. and known for its acid reflux drug Prilosec.
The company has also launched a program in which patients are able to get their prescription medications at the discretion of their doctor, the company said.
“Our focus is to create a more affordable, more affordable drug,” said John S. Bernstein, a spokesman for Pfizer. “We believe it’s the most affordable and effective treatment for acid reflux that has ever been invented.”
The drug will be available for $10 per pill, or about $10 if patients are eligible. The drug will cost $17.99 for a bottle of 12, with 12 tablets a day, or $11.99 if patients are not covered.
The company also is developing a drug to treat the pain of heartburn, which occurs when the stomach becomes upset.
Pfizer says it’s working with Teva to bring to market a generic version of Prilosec that can be used in its medicines and other similar treatments.
Nexium has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
